Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programs

Nyamatuta Community Water Supply Project
The Initiative for Sustainable Community Development (ISCoD) NGO has connected over 50 households in Nyamatuta Village to a reliable water supply, also benefiting Nyamatuta Primary and Secondary Schools. This water is sourced from the Nyamokenye Spring, where ISCoD implemented a flagship spring protection and rejuvenation project. Collaborating with the local county government and development partners, ISCoD aims to replicate this model in other regions. The initiative has proven highly effective in protecting water sources and restoring seasonal springs, significantly enhancing water availability and promoting sustainable resource management in the community.

WASH Education & Sensitization Programme
The organization, informed by baseline surveys on water access, quality, household demands, and the role of youth and women in water management, implements WASH education and awareness programs. These initiatives focus on improving water quality, promoting sanitation and hygiene at the household level, and encouraging water conservation and harvesting. In collaboration with RWICA-Uganda and with support from the +1 Global Fund for WASH, the organization is advancing a school-focused WASH program. This initiative aims to establish or enhance WASH and Environment clubs in schools, integrating hygiene and environmental conservation practices into educational activities for sustainable community impact.

Water Quality Test & Recommendation
The in-house laboratory conducts tests on essential water parameters such as pH, turbidity, salinity, conductivity, and temperature, offering preliminary assessments of water samples. For more comprehensive analysis, advanced testing is referred to partner laboratories. These water quality evaluations play a crucial role in preventing waterborne diseases, thereby protecting public health. By ensuring access to safe water, the initiative contributes to fostering a healthier and more productive population. Through consistent monitoring and early detection of potential contaminants, the laboratory helps maintain high water safety standards, supporting sustainable community development and overall well-being.

Technology in Water Resources Management
Recognizing the need for updated data on water sources, including spring profiles, water quality, and geo-data, ISCoD has developed a GIS-enabled web platform. This platform aims to map water sources in Kisii and Nyamira counties during its initial rollout. Additionally, ISCoD is training community champions and waterpoint managers to update and manage data on water sources. The platform is envisioned as a vital tool to support local governments and development partners in planning and resource allocation for water projects. By providing accurate, real-time information, it facilitates informed decision-making to enhance water resource development and access in the region.
